Mini Donkeys

Miniature donkeys, originally from the Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia, are small animals, standing around 36 inches or less at the withers. They are affectionate, social creatures that form strong bonds with humans and other animals. Donkeys can be livestock guardians or companion animals as long as they have been socialized with small animals early in life. 

The best environment for a miniature donkey includes a safe, fenced pasture with adequate shelter from the elements. While they are hardy animals, they do need protection from extreme weather, particularly cold and wet conditions. They thrive in dry climates with access to shade during hot months and should always have clean, fresh water available. Miniature donkeys are herd animals and do not do well in isolation. It’s recommended to keep at least two so they have companionship. With proper care, including regular hoof trimming, dental checks, and a balanced diet (mostly hay and limited grains), they can live upwards of 25 to 35 years.

We LOVE our little donkeys. They do require shelter to keep them from getting rain rot.

Donkeys make wonderful companion animals as long as they’ve been raised with smaller animals and intact males may not be suitable for this important job. 

I want a mini donkey. What do I need? A good rule of thumb is 2-3 mini’s per acre with a good fence. Donkeys  are herd animals and will require a companion animal. Another donkey,goat,sheep,or cow will work.

Additionally: a source for good hay; a vet (establish yourself as a client BEFORE you need them) Shelter from the elements is necessary. Also make sure you a have a small area for catching them. Emergencies may arise that require you to catch them for the vet or a trip to the animal hospital. That being said, if you do not own a trailer, know where to borrow one, or have at least 2 contacts for animal transporters.
