When the kids were young, we wanted to provide them with nutritious food; so we began raising our own chickens, cows, pigs, and rabbits for meat. We also started a large garden of fresh fruits and vegetables. Then we purchased dairy goats for milking, followed soon by our first milk cow, Jersey Girl.
We spent our first 15 years at our family farm in Scaly Mountain, North Carolina; learning valuable techniques, meeting others in the farming community, and eventually expanding beyond the capacity of our 12 acres.
Moving to ‘Greener pastures” Sam started a large cattle operation in South Carolina with one of his lifelong friends and neighbors, Clint James of Osage Farms Sam and Clint rented the Bryson Farm and started researching breeds of cattle best for meat production and that led to them pulling a double decker cow trailer to Texas to purchase their first herd of mama cows.

Sam and I then began renting farm land for our own cows. After managing our herds on these properties for many years, driving many miles to feed, monitor, and care for the livestock, we decided to settle down in Mountain Rest, South Carolina at our forever home.
Now as empty nesters, we have begun our new adventure building a homestead while living in a camper. We began by putting up fences, establishing pastures, building structures like barns, ponds, feeding pads, and installing water tanks.
One of the biggest challenges we have faced is the South Carolina red clay dirt. The property we moved to was once an apple orchard, commercially managed it was sprayed, chemically fertilized and depleted of nutrients. To combat this issue, we have implemented many regenerative farming practices such as rotational grazing, aerating, along with fertilizing with manure and compost.
Who We Are
Our one goal was to provide a safe, peaceful environment where animals can live healthy & happy lives.
We are Sam and Jennifer, the heart and soul behind Schmitt Farm.

Located in a quiet stretch of countryside between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the South Carolina Piedmont, Schmitt Farm is more than a piece of land, it’s a labor of love.
We have a deep respect for animals and nature, and built our farm with one goal in mind; to provide a safe, peaceful environment where animals can live healthy, happy lives. The animals are treated like family here. We employ ethical farming practices, such as pasture rotation, clean living spaces, no factory-farm conditions, and no harsh chemicals.
We are now ready to share our beloved animals with others who will value them. We don’t sell to just anyone. Every potential owner will be carefully vetted to ensure the animals will receive the care they deserve and continue to live happy lives.
The breeds and ages of animals we have for sale will vary. But, one thing will remain consistent; we love our animals, raise them humanely, and are committed to selling them only to interested parties who will do the same.
Our farm is located in Mountain Rest, South Carolina, approximately:
55 miles west of Greenville
80 miles southwest of Asheville
126 miles northeast of Atlanta
171 miles west of Charlotte
